[Oracle RAC 11.2 Installation on Oracle Linux 5.8 x86_64]: Changing kernel parameters and database administrator account parameters


Editing config files

Server: node1, node2
  1. Edit the /etc/sysctl.conf file

It is recommended to comment out (put a # sign before them) the existing kernel.shmmax and kernel.shmall parameters. They will later be added as parameters along with the other Oracle parameters.

# sed -i.gres "s/kernel.shmmax/#kernel.shmmax/g" /etc/sysctl.conf
# sed -i.gres "s/kernel.shmall/#kernel.shmall/g" /etc/sysctl.conf



# vi /etc/sysctl.conf


kernel.shmmax = 50% of RAM (in bytes) / 2


The amount of RAM in bytes can be found by running the command

# free -b

Add the following kernel parameters to the end of the file.

# sysctl -p

  1. Edit the /etc/security/limits.conf file

    vi /etc/security/limits.conf

    vi /etc/pam.d/login

Configuring oracle11 user environment parameters on cluster nodes

  1. Edit the /home/oracle11/.bash_profile file

The ORACLE_SID and ORACLE_UNQNAME values must be unique on each cluster node. Otherwise the configs are the same.
